times in The Wall Street Journal, The New York
Times, the New Yorker, and New York Magazine. Janis

Operations
Touting itself as
the “boutique” matchmaking service, her business is
kept exclusive through the executive-sized fees.
Although Janis’ website also provides an Internet
dating option, it is broadcast only within the
confines of the site, and claims to be the only
online dating service run by a real, live
matchmaker.
JSSM has over
47,000 members in the tri-state area which consists
of the “database.” As for her caseload, clients who
retain Ms. Spindel for her one-on-one service number
between 50 and 100 at a time – a manageable number.
The age of clients ranges from the late 20’s to the
mid 60’s with the bulk of clients in the 30’s, 40’s
and 50’s.
She uses a
rigorous screening process, in-depth interviews and
a keen intuition to seek out the best of the best.

Clients go through a pre-screening telephone
conversation with a senior staff member.
Ms. Spindel claims
that her clients are well educated, professional,
good looking, exciting and sophisticated people
living in the tri-state area with a higher
concentration in NYC. Janis meets every potential
client personally. During the initial meeting, Janis
talks about everything from a “wish list” to family
values and where to raise their children. There are
no computer programs to match clients. This is what
is claimed to be unique about the JSSM service in
terms of a “hands on” approach with extensive
follow-up and feedback after each introduction.
Ms. Spindel first
screens clients by phone, asking for vital statistics
like occupation, height and weight. Those who “don’t
take care of themselves (overweight) will probably
be turned away, as will those who can’t afford her
services. Assuming they clear that hurdle, initial
consultations vary depending on gender. Men
initially pay for the cost of taking Spindel to
dinner on a simulated date. The man chooses the
restaurant, and she chats him up while scrutinizing
his chivalry, manners and conversational skills.
Along with
individual matchmaking, Ms. Spindel also organizes
events, cocktail parties, intimate dinners and
daytime outings for single parents and their kids.
She provides large upscale parties with 100-400
attendees, hosted in various restaurants, for
$75-500. She also runs intimate dinner parties for
groups of 16 men and women.
Fees
Women… a 30 minute
one-on-one interview with Janis costs $1,000.
Men… Preferred
one-on-one for men: 12 pre-screened introductions
over the course of 1 year. Starting at $50,000, up
to $500,000.
