In
his recent book, The Rosedale Diet
(HarperCollins Publishing, Inc., 2004, $23.95, hardcover, $14.95, paperback),
Dr. Rosedale presents an eating plan designed to regulate
the hormone leptin, which he explains is key in controlling appetite and weight
loss. According to Rosedale, leptin tells the brain when to eat, how much
to eat and when to stop eating, and may be one of the body's most important
hunger control mechanisms. Therefore, if you control leptin production in
the body, you can control your weight. According to the book,
The Rosedale Diet
will make you feel satisfied, reduce your cravings, and put you in control of
your "sweet tooth." In addition, adhering to the plan may even help
eliminate or reduce heart disease, hypertension, diabetes, and other conditions
associated with aging.
According to The Rosedale
Diet,
we eat and eat,
but still remain hungry.
Rosedale
explains that most
people have leptin levels which
are out of control, and this
imbalance causes overeating.
As a result the body stores more
fat than it burns. A diet
high in healthy fats and low in
carbohydrates, saturated fat,
and trans-fatty acids (present
in many processed foods) can
bring leptin levels back in
balance and consequently reduce
hunger. Rosedale also
advises adding exercise,
although only 15 minutes daily.
Dr. Rosedale is an
internationally renowned expert
in nutritional and metabolic
medicine, and an anti-aging
specialist. He founded
Rosedale Center in Denver,
Colorado. He is co-founder
of Colorado Center of Metabolic
Medicine in Boulder, and founder
of Carolina Center of Metabolic
Medicine in Asheville, North
Carolina. He also
maintains a website,
www.rosedalemetabolics.com
which offers
a line of nutritional
supplements called Rosedale
Metabolics.
Carol Colman has co-authored
books on health and medicine.
So, how does the
plan work? Dieters are
advised to select from foods on
his "A" list, including
"healthy-fat" foods (avocados,
nuts, olives, lobster, crab,
shrimp, goat cheese, etc.).
The plan then gradually adds
foods from his "B" list (like
steak, lamb chops, fruits,
beans). The plans contains a
28-day menu which includes over
100 recipes (such as Gingery
Chicken Soup, Black Bean Wrap,
Raspberry Mousse Cake, Lasagna,
Dilled Salmon and Fresh
Asparagus, French Silk Pie).
The Rosedale Diet is simple to follow, and its menus include a wide
variety of foods to create a
well-balanced diverse diet.
The book's clear and practical
approach to eating cites
references in the back to
validate that Rosedale's
assumptions. It's the
opinion of analysts at
BestDietForMe that the 15 minutes of daily exercise recommended in the book
falls way short of aerobic
exercise requirements for a
heart health normally advised by
experts in the medical
community.
