Summary

This daily gourmet meal delivery company has been in business for 8 years and its program is based on a 40/30/30 plan (protein/carbs/fat). It is a wheat and sugar-free plan and there are no desserts. Meals are delivered fresh daily. The plan is based on eating 5 small meals a day--3 meals and 2 "snacks".

In the New York area, the company delivers to  Westchester, Manhattan, the Bronx, and in Connecticut to Fairfield County. The company has a sister company in South Florida, Diet At Your Doorstep.

Monica Lynn, Founder and CEO, is a Certified Nutritional Consultant and the author of 5 Square Low-Carb Meals: the 20-Day Makeover Plan. She has been quoted in major publications such as: The New York Times, Glamour, Vogue, and Marie Claire. She is currently working on a television show. Ms. Lynn is the main nutritional consultant. The company does not employ any counselors.

5 Squares estimates that their clients are divided about 50/50% male/female. Many are executives, entertainers and Type II diabetics. Some clients stay on the plan for years but most average about 8 weeks.

The company has 13 employees and doesn't really advertise, getting its customers mainly via word of mouth. Clients are evenly split between those looking for weight loss versus those seeking healthy gourmet food.

How The Service Works

5 Squares is a healthy eating program that eliminates empty calories hidden in foods such as wheat and sugar. It is used not only for weight loss, but for building lean muscle mass and for increasing performance by professional athletes and fitness competitors.

The gourmet cuisine is made up of three categories: proteins, starches (starchy carbohydrates), and vegetables. The average daily intake is approximately 1100-1400 calories. The plan eliminates refined sugars and wheat and stays away from dairy.

The program can be followed anywhere from 3 to 7 days per week.

Kosher plans are available as is an organic plan. Accommodations can be made for people that want to omit certain foods.

One can expect to lose the most amount of weight in the first week. 98% of that is "water weight". A healthy weight loss should be expected (approximately 1.5 - 3 pounds per week).

The Cost

Prices are as follows:

Meals for the regular subscription cost $41 per day and you can purchase a 3-7 day plan that fits your lifestyle.

The trial subscription allows you to try out 5 Squares for 5 days. Meals cost $50 per day. If you decide you like it then you can purchase a regular subscription.

About 80% of customers use the plan Monday to Friday, so at 5 days per week, this would come to a little over $200 per week or $820 per month. However, if you do use the service all seven days of the week, it could cost as much as  $1,230 per month.  Prices do include shipping. There is a $1 per day surcharge when gas prices go over $3.00 per gallon.
