Company Summary
HMR
has a long track record as a medically supervised weight loss program run
via clinics, hospitals and doctors nationwide. They are known for their
excellent and in-depth training of providers. In recent years, like many
other medical programs (Medifast, for example), the company branched out to
offer their meal replacements direct to the consumer, creating a mail order
catalog as well
HMR At Home© “Healthy
Solutions” is Health Management Resources’ direct to consumer healthy
weight loss program. It involves no visits to health clinics. One simply
enrolls in the program with a convenient provider, purchases vacuum sealed
microwavable (not frozen) meal replacement shakes, entrees and soup mixes
online, and has them delivered to their door (nationwide in the US), then
follow the program for eating and exercise. A new product coming out soon is
a multi-grain hot cereal that’s interchangeable with the shakes.
HMR has built a
reputation over 20 years for providing high quality patient care along with
weight loss results. Studies have shown that meal replacements such as HMR
provides (shakes and entrees) are an effective tool for weight loss and
ongoing weight maintenance.
The company began
selling direct to consumer via its printed catalog about four years ago.
Next, the firm began offering weight loss phone counseling support ($79 for
6 weeks of service), about 2.5 years ago. Most recently, it started offering
the home delivery of food products only.
More than 70% of clients
are female, around age 44. The demographic of the At Home customer is very
similar to the in-clinic HMR medically supervised program.
HMR will be focusing on
serving the corporate market more, leveraging their existing relationships
with hundreds of hospitals.
HMR management was
surprised at the average weight of their typical At Home client—220 lbs. Mr.
Stifler thinks that specialized markets will grow for people with specific
conditions, such as diabetics, children and adolescents, the elderly, etc.
In fact, the company will be testing a program for adolescents in 2007.
HMR thinks that
the “healthy eating/gourmet food” segment of the market is small, as
compared with the weight loss-focused client. The daily fresh food delivery
services are serving local markets such as NYC and LA and HMR predicts that
many of them will go out of business. You need a large number of customers
to make this a viable long-term business model.
How The Program Works
The HMR At Home
program follows the same approach as HMR's clinics nationwide. Participants
maintain a structured diet, keep records and share them with their weight
loss coach on a weekly "accountability" call, as well as taking part in a
weekly 45-minute facilitated conference/ coaching call for dieting support
for the coming week.
Consumers have two
choices to purchase:
1)
food products and program materials only, no phone support
2)
foods, program materials, and phone support (weekly group calls).
Most people choose the
food and program materials only, without the phone support.
The company’s shakes,
soups, and entrees range from 100-270 calories per serving, and can be
combined with favorite fruits and vegetables for hearty meals. The plan
provides a minimum of 1200 calories per day, ensuring complete nutrition and
including essential protein, vitamins and minerals.
The initial 6-week
“strong start” program is followed by additional 4-week cycles as required
for continued weight loss, then a minimum of three months of weight
maintenance. Average weight loss of over 23 pounds or around 10% of initial
body weight, can be expected in about weeks.
The daily eating plan
comprises 3 shakes, 2 entrees, 5 servings of fruits & vegetables, 8 glasses
of water plus snack bars.
The company claims an
average weight loss of 28.2 lbs. on the At Home program, data that is
documented and published.
Pricing
Supplies can be
purchased separately, and/or use the 3-week Quick Start program. This
contains 3 shakes and 2 entrees (standard or lactose-free) per day for 21
days, plus diet support material including an eating plan--at a cost of
around $280 including shipping.
A free recipe booklet is
included with the first order. Daily fruit and vegetable requirements for 5
servings are your responsibility, so add this cost to the average $13.35 per
day for the Quick Start program.
The Healthy Solutions
program costs $94/week for the food (shakes, bars, entrees) plus $12/week
for the phone support - conference call – or a total of $106/week.
A 2-week Healthy Shakes
diet kit, no entrees included, is available for $90 ($100 for lactose-free),
providing 54 shakes mixes or about 4 per day (costing roughly $6.65 a day).
