Retail Diet pills Market Summary

Diet pills sales were down 5% in 2005, as new competitors entered the market and the post-ephedra ban’s effects lingered on and dampened consumer’s enthusiasm for these products. In addition, there was more government scrutiny of this category, and ultimately fines levied on several major marketers of heavily advertised and popular brands. In addition, consumers may be growing weary of claims of fantastic results, which they are not experiencing.

Competitors have already switched to new ingredients other than ephedra (like Hoodia, green tea extract, chromium, etc.), and will continue to do so. We also think that mail order and infomercials will remain popular with the do-it-yourself dieter, despite FTC fines and regulatory actions.

The biggest competition for OTC diet pills is new prescription diet drugs that may enter the market.

It is only new product innovations and continued heavy advertising that will support this very moderate growth. For example, SLIMQUICK was the first OTC diet pill to offer consumers a comprehensive diet and exercise program and a free 32-page booklet. Slimage is targeted at women over age 35, and promises a weight loss product that defies the visible signs of aging. It also offers a free weight loss booklet, with a walking program and recipes. Marketers will likely need to complement their diet pills with more—informational websites (as Slim-Fast has done with meal replacements), booklets, guides, and appealing to specific niches (women, men, elderly overweight, etc.). Other health benefits and boosting energy will be touted along with weight loss.

Description

According to the manufacturer ...

"SLIMQUICK is an advanced fat burner designed specifically for a women's body."

"In addition to being a great weight loss product, SLIMQUICK also increases energy. SLIMQUICK's formula contains various herbs and ingredients that improve energy throughout the day."

"Certain vitamins and minerals such as calcium, folic acid, vitamin B-12, vitamin B-6 and vitamin D are crucial to a woman's metabolism and overall health. For this reason, SLIMQUICK contains CYCLOVITE, a proprietary blend of these specific vitamins and minerals that help support overall health and wellness."

Note that this product contains a significantly potent methylxanthine (i.e. caffeine and caffeine-like stimulants) mixture, in excess of 200 mg per regular 2 capsule serving.

Ingredients

Included in these complexes are Green Tea Extract, Yerba Mate Extract, Clary Sage Extract, Cocoa Bean Extract, Dandelion Leaf and Root Extract, Horsetail Extract, Uva Ursi Extract, caffeine and soy isoflavones. The vitamin and mineral complex includes vitamins D, B-12 & B-6, folic acid and calcium.

Positives

To the company's credit, each bottle of SLIMQUICK includes a free copy of the sophisticated SLIMQUICK Diet & Exercise Program.

On the SLIMQUICK website they provide all viewers with sample diet and training programs. However, the advanced programs that are part of the SLIMQUICK system are only available to current SLIMQUICK users, and are password protected. A supporting website and a diet and exercise plan is more than most retail diet pills offer. At least they made an effort in the right direction.

Commentary

The bottom line on SLIMQUICK fat burner pills for women...

Your weight loss success is likely to be as a result of the diet and exercise program that accompanies the product, and NOT the product itself.

No clinical data validates any of the product claims, although the diet plan itself will be more than enough to encourage significant weight loss in many individuals. The product itself is high on hype, and short on proof. To top that off, there is actually very little active ingredient in most of the various mixtures.

The confusing complex blends "backed by science" are little more than hype. The recommended dose is equivalent to 2 cups of coffee. The fact is, if you take caffeine your metabolic rate will increase, and you will burn more calories. However, the potential drawbacks are that your metabolic rate will eventually dip below normal and caffeine is addictive.

As with most retail diet pills, this one is advertised as aiding in rapid weight loss, which could be unhealthy. The customer testimonials also seem extreme.

SLIMQUICK post claims of seeing big results after 8 weeks of use. Any product advertising rapid weight loss can be very tempting for consumers but the problem with losing large amounts of weight quickly is that it almost never stays off.

In our opinion, herbal supplement formulas lack the scientific proof to be considered as part of a healthy diet plan for achieving and maintaining long term weight loss.  We believe that use of diet pills alone falls short in that it does not educate dieters on healthy diet habits, and does not address the psychological issues many dieters face, as do many traditional weight loss programs. A diet program that fails to recognize these two important components may not sufficiently serve the needs of many dieters.  Overall, we feel it would be unwise to rely on an herbal supplement as a long-term weight solution.
