There's nothing surprising or complicated about The Special K Diet. It's simply good marketing. Kellogg's Foods uses a nifty, if not somewhat predictable marketing ploy to sell more of its fortified, rice and wheat flake cereal. The company invites those who would like to lose 3-5 pounds to eat 1 serving of Special K for breakfast (1 cup cereal with 2/3 cup skim milk) plus a fruit, and another serving (with fruit) in place of lunch or dinner. By eating two 150 cal./bowl servings, plus one well-balanced (hopefully!) meal, you will dramatically reduce your calorie intake for the day. Realistically, a dieter would probably achieve the same weight loss results using most any variety of whole-grain cereal on the market (containing 10 grams or less of sugar). In our opinion, while this may be an easy, short term weight loss plan for losing a few pounds, such a limited diet would be somewhat boring to maintain for the long-term. As a healthy diet plan, we find that it lacks some of the essential nutrients necessary for a well-balanced, healthy diet. Using the Special K Diet as a weight loss program will not educate dieters on healthy eating habits. Also, it fails to address the psychological issues many dieters face (such as emotional overeating), as do many traditional weight loss programs. A diet program that fails to recognize these two important components may not sufficiently serve the needs of many dieters. For serious, sustained weight loss, and for maintaining your goal weight, there are much better options.
