Ads for Hydroxycut, a brand name of ephedra free diet pills are everywhere. It seems that Muscle Tech, its manufacturer, has spent a fortune promoting the product in the past few years, both on TV and in print. Prior to the FDA ban on products containing ephedra, the original Hydroxycut ingredients were an herbal ephedra cocktail composed of ma huang, white willow bark and guarana, plus hydroxycitric acid (believed to be a carb-blocker), l-carnitine (an amino acid believed to stimulate fat burning), and chromium (regulates insulin levels and helps balance blood sugar levels). It is unknown if Hydroxycut side effects were observed when the formula contained ephedra. The new Hydroxycut formula has eliminated some components of the ephedra cocktail, and added other ingredients. The new Hydroxycut ingredients are:
Since the main ingredient of Hydroxycut - hydroxycitrate acid - is believed to be a carb-blocker, this product could be described as a "carb blocker," with some incidental ingredients added to help suppress appetite and speed up metabolism. The effectiveness of this product has not been scientifically proven. In addition, studies have not proven the long term safety of unregulated herbal supplements or their role, if any, in achieving weight loss. There are just too many unanswered questions. If you were to stop taking the supplement, would you just gain the weight back? Also, how long is it safe to keep taking an herbal supplement like this - what are the long-term health effects? What Hydroxycut side effects have dieters experienced, if any? Is there any documented proof that herbal supplements really work as a healthy diet plan? In our opinion, herbal supplement formulas lack the scientific proof to be considered as part of a healthy diet plan for achieving and maintaining long term weight loss. We believe that use of diet pills alone falls short in that it does not educate dieters on healthy diet habits, and does not address the psychological issues many dieters face, as do many traditional weight loss programs. A diet program that fails to recognize these two important components may not sufficiently serve the needs of many dieters. Overall, we feel it would be unwise to rely on an herbal supplement as a long-term weight solution.
