Safety of Weight Loss Surgery Is Improving
July 30, 2009 - The New research has found that the safety of bariatric (weight loss) surgery has improved. The study looked at safety results for gastric bands and stomach stapling at 10 United States hospitals specializing in these procedures, from 2005 to 2007. For every 1,000 patients, 3 died during or within a month of the surgery, and 43 had a major complication of some kind. That's much better than the approximately 20 deaths per 1,000 patients that studies found just a few years earlier. And, it's definitely lower than the long-term risk of dying of heart disease, diabetes and other consequences of carrying around more pounds than an obese person's organs can handle, according to medical experts. According to the American Society for Metabolic & Bariatric Surgery, last year at least 220,000 weight loss surgeries were performed in the U.S.
