YesHeadquarters Dr. Phil McGraw P.O. Box 1902 5482 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90036 Website: not operational Summary – Who Is Dr. Phil? Life Strategist Dr. Phillip C. McGraw hosts a nationally syndicated series. He is already seen in 98% of the country. Dr. Phil, known to millions as the human behavior expert from The Oprah Winfrey Show, is also a #1 New York Times bestselling author and co-founder of Courtroom Sciences, Inc., the world’s leading litigation consulting firm. Drawing on 25 years of experience in psychology and human functioning, Dr. Phil deals with real issues in his "tell-it-like-it-is" style. Dr. Phil and his three sisters grew up in Oklahoma and Texas. He has been married to his wife Robin for 26 years. In 1989, he co-founded Courtroom Sciences, Inc., a company that assists the legal profession by conducting mock trial, behavioral analysis, jury selection and mediation. It was through CSI that Dr. Phil met Oprah Winfrey. In 1996, she was being sued by cattlemen who claimed she defamed the beef industry on one of her shows, and Oprah hired CSI to help her with her case. Dr. Phil did just that in 1998, and soon after he became an expert on her show, dealing with life strategies and relationships. The author of three New York Times bestsellers, Dr. Phil also conducts motivational seminars across America. Most people will never go to see a therapist and an estimated 90% never get past the first chapter of the self-help books they buy. His income from the TV show is rumored to be $5 million a year plus a percentage of the profits. Lecture fees are reported to be $100,000 each. He no longer sees patients. Dr. Phil typically features three or four couples, each in a segment introduced with a short tape, made at their home, asking for McGraw’s help. The shows are often themed and include subjects such as sex, money, obesity, spoiled kids and frustrated moms, siblings, and other pairings. Guests come from across the country and their expenses are paid: many apply to appear via his website, www.drphil.com.Needless to say, without Oprah Winfrey’s stamp of approval, Dr. Phil, in our opinion, would be just another psychologist and would not be nationally known. As we all know, when Oprah endorses someone, they become an overnight marketing and financial success. Dr. Phil has leveraged this fame by jumping on the weight loss bandwagon via writing a book and launching a supporting website. However, BestDietForMe.com analysts wonder, along with many others, just what makes him an authority on obesity and weight management? How The Program Works In his book, The Ultimate Weight Solution: The 7 Keys to Weight Loss Freedom, Dr. Phil McGraw claims to change the way you behave and think about food, weight loss, and yourself. The book does not offer weight loss quick fixes, and his action plan is designed to give you results to last over the long term. The plan does not involve counting calories or tracking carbohydrates or fat. The book aims to get at the real reasons why you've lost control of your weight, with tools to identify what to eat, when to eat, how to eat, and why you eat when you don't want to. While most diet bestsellers focus mainly on nutrition, meal planning, and specific recipes, Dr. Phil’s book focuses mostly on the psychology of overeating. This is what makes it stand out. You won’t find any recipes in his book, unlike 99% of the other diet books being sold. Dr. Phil and his team created a self-help line of weight loss products called Shape Up!, consisting of the following products: … contains high levels of fiber and protein Weight loss supplements… two types of supplements are offered: one for "pear" shaped figures and one for "apples." Meal replacement shakes… these Shakes can be used as a snack or, when used with fruit or vegetables, a meal replacement. They are low in sugar, and are available in pre-measured powder or ready-to-drink cans. Status Report Dr. Phil has recently run into some trouble with his weight loss plan, as of late October 2005. Several unhappy dieters are suing him over his now discontinued Shape Up! diet plan, and are seeking class-action status. Plaintiffs claimed they lost no weight on the program. In a lawsuit filed in California last year, McGraw is accused of making false and misleading claims for this supplements, including claims that they would reduce appetite swings and carb cravings. The FTC investigated the pills when it appeared that there was no clinical data or trials to back up the claims. When Texas-based CSA Nutraceuticals agreed to stop marketing the products in March 2004, the FTC dropped its probe. No ruling is expected until next year on the lawsuits. Shape Up! shakes, bars, and multivitamins were on sale for almost a year in pharmacies, supermarkets and retailers such as Target and Wal-Mart. The plan called for dieters to take 22 pills (herbal supplements) a day, at a cost of $120 per month. The program also advised dieters to adopt a low-calorie diet and to exercise. This line was heavily advertised in women’s magazines and other print media since mid-2003. Dr. Phil also has a website: www.shapeup.com. There, you can register free of charge and as a member will have the ability to post on message boards, participate in online discussions, and access all information contained on this website, including:
Since Dr. Phil’s strength is psychology, his website does provide some very good, in-depth psych tools. You will find a 20-question "readiness profile" to determine if you are really ready to begin a weight loss program. He also includes a 20-question "personal environmental audit", and a 15-question "behavioral audit." That’s a total of 55 weight loss and behavioral/psychology questions, much more than most other diet websites. The following tools may also be included: Meal Generator Shopping List Generator Workout Planner Progress Tracker and more! Dr. Phil’s program got another boost when the popular diet website, eDiets.com, licensed the plan and adapted it for online usage—now one of this company’s many available plans. However, eDiets does not offer the Dr. Phil plan anymore. Comment Dr. Phil’s visibility on TV gave his diet program strong ongoing exposure and publicity, which in the short term made it somewhat successful. However, the foray into dietary supplements proved to be fatal, landing him in legal trouble. In addition, the cost of the plan was expensive and did not produce desired results. Dr. Phil is still a newcomer to the weight loss field. BestDietForMe.com analysts also wonder how many of the patients Dr. Phil counseled over his career were counseled specifically for weight management issues. If someone wants to buy his book, it may be helpful in addressing psychological issues related to weight management, but that's ALL we'd do. We think Dr. Phil should stick to what he knows best--dispensing psych advice, not selling weight loss PRODUCTS.
