Summary During the course of their careers, which has spanned over 15+ years, the Eades have personally treated thousands of overweight patients who had literally given up all hope of losing weight. The doctors' success in their private practice led to their coauthoring the bestseller, Protein Power. The book, first published in 1996, remained on The New York Times bestseller list for over a year, and has sold more than 3 million copies to date. More recently, the Eades have focused their activities on writing, research, lecturing and creating products aimed at helping the public to improve its metabolic health. Since Protein Power, the couple has published four other successful books, including the Protein Power Lifeplan and The 30-Day Low-Carb Diet Solution. How The Plan Works The Protein Power Diet is a high protein low carbohydrate diet similar to the Atkins Diet but with more scientific data and better researched. The Protein Power Diet comes with literature that includes calculations for discovering your ideal diet plan and how many carbohydrates and proteins you may consume based upon your height, weight, activity level and body fat percentage. High protein foods such as meats, poultry and fish are encouraged as is milk, cream and cheese. While following the Protein Power diet you should stay away from high carbohydrate foods such as pasta and bread--similar to the Atkins diet. The diet is broken into in three stages; stage one is "Intervention", which has a very low carbohydrate intake. This is followed until you approach your ideal weight. Stage two is "Transition", where some carbohydrates are slowly introduced into your diet until your ideal weight is met. "Maintenance" is the last stage. This is when your carbohydrate intake is increased to keep you at your ideal weight. This diet has the same problems with ketosis that are found in the Atkins Diet. This diet book, written by the Eades, Protein Power claims that you need to control insulin response within your body to achieve health and normal weight. Depending on your activity level, they allocate amounts of protein required at each meal. You are allowed a modest amount of carbs (30-50g per day) but you must carefully monitor this amount. You need to count everything and eat specific amounts at certain times. Protein Power also recommends diet supplements. The Protein Power Diet also recommends specific exercises, which amount to weight lifting to maintain muscle mass, and short, vigorous aerobic activity to simulate the activity of our caveman ancestors. According to nutrition and obesity experts, the advantages or plusses associated with this plan include the following:
The disadvantages or shortcomings are as follows:
The Protein Power Website The Eades do have a website to visit: www.eatprotein.com. The Drs. Eades have used their approach to Low-Carb/High Protein dieting to develop a kit, available online. This kit (cost: $179) includes information on all three stages of the Protein Power Diet. The Protein Power Pyramid Kit provides includes: 4 informational books, including a Low-Carb Cookbook, 4 Audio CDs that explain the diet, a Quick Start Guide, a Physician’s Packet with information for your doctor, a magnesium/potassium supplement for the first 7 days of the diet, and a specially formulated low-carb protein powder to help you get the necessary protein. This is actually a very "deep" and content rich website that complements their books and also has an e-commerce store where you may buy various books, fitness gear, "bundles" or packages of their products, and kits. The website provides the following useful features and interactive tools:
You can buy lots of their specially formulated products at their web store, including baking mixes, nutrition bars ($27-35 for a box of 12), protein powders, beverages, snacks, and vitamins. A bundle of products, such as a breakfast package (which include two of their books), will cost $142.99. You can send emails to the Eades, but they don’t have the capability of responding to individual queries. You can find discussion topics and information and experiences of others doing the plan on their bulletin boards and in chat rooms. Currently, there is no referral list of health care practitioners who follow the Protein Power program. If you do a web search under low carb, you may be able to get a response. The Eades are planning training seminars for health care practitioners to teach them about the program, and they hope to start a referral list at that time. Comment According to nutrition and obesity experts, the idea that a high protein, low-carb diet helps you lose weight by reducing insulin levels is inaccurate. Reducing your intake of any food will achieve this. If you are convinced that people like Dr. Atkins are right about low-carb diets, then this may be one more such plan for you to consider. In addition, BestDietForMe.com analysts find their website to be very useful and to provide for interactive communication and support. The Eades have moved beyond merely books, online, similar to Atkins, and provide a comprehensive repertoire of products and tools that support their plan. We are impressed with the website. ...............................................................................................................................................................
