According to the Calorie Control Council (CCC)
in a new survey released
in early August, dieting is a constant
concern for more than 95 million adults. Fully 62% of people trying to
control their weight think about dieting
year-round, and that number is an even
higher 70% among dieters.
Even though the percentage of people who are
dieting has dropped from 33% in 2004 to 29%
in 2007, according to the CCC, the number
of
dieting attempts has risen. In 2004, the
average dieter made 2.5 dieting attempts per
year. However, today dieters make 4
attempts per year--the highest figure in
15 years.
Just what are people doing to control their
weight? Among dieters, cutting down on foods
high in sugar is the top strategy at 87%.
Other methods:
-
exercise (83%)
-
eating smaller portions of foods (82%)
-
using low-calorie, reduced sugar and
sugar-free foods & beverages (80%)
-
combining calorie reduction with exercise
(73%)
-
skipping meals (32%)
The share of people skipping meals has risen
substantially since 2004, when it stood at
23%. However, on a good note, the number of
dieters using a restrictive weight loss plan
such as Atkins has fallen from 20% in 2004
to 13% by 2007.
In addition to the 65 million Americans who
say they are on a diet, another 88 million
adults (55%) are trying to control their
weight.
